At the age of 16, Maryam Yaqoob and her family were forced from their homeland of Iraq by the war in the country.
They settled in Syria until being accepted for resettlement through a program by the United Nations and began a new start in Canada. In 2011, they moved to Alberta and have remained there. Yaqoob, now a University of Calgary medical student, has been named a winner of the RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrants Award. During her first year of medical school, she helped co-found the University of Calgary Stem Cell Club.
The focus was on enlisting African-Americans to donate stem-cells, as the group is underrepresented on Canada’s donor registry. The program Yaqoob co-founded has seen about 100 donors in the first year and has over 500 to date. She is thankful to be recognized with the award, which included notable youth achievement. She said she has only been in Canada for nine years, and to achieve this is amazing.
