People Living in Canada Are Learning Survival Skills

Survival

Many people living in Canada were not prepared for the global pandemic.

People rushed to the stores to stock up on food and toilet paper, but Dave MacDonald wasn’t one of those people. Along with his wife and two sons, he was remaining calm and peaceful at their remote home in southern Manitoba. They live “off the grid” close to Lac du Bonnet, where they grow most of their own food and hunt for the rest. The 55-year-old said he doesn’t even need toilet paper and instead can utilize snow or leaves.

Survival

MacDonald represents a growing community of “preppers,” people who are ready for possible catastrophes that could devastate infrastructure and governments. MacDonald teaches survivalist courses and worked a long career with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a search-and-rescue specialist. He has seen boats on fire, planes crash, people fall overboard, helicopters crash, trains derailed, and wars break out everywhere. Covid-19 brought an uptick in his International Canadian School of Survival. More Canadians and Americans are purchasing remote properties in rural British Columbia and Alberta since the pandemic started. A co-founder of Survival Realty based in the U.S. said he sees more people concerned about the virus and living in very populated cities.
